Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to overhaul America's immigration policy, and just 35 days into his presidency, he seems to be sticking to it. The First Lady worked as a model in the States while here on a tourist visa, which constitutes a crime. Another attorney, New York City immigration specialist Cheryl David, agreed: If Melania worked on her tourist visa, she "definitely violated her status, and if it came to immigration's attention...they certainly could put her into removal proceedings." That's an immigration no-no (legally she would need a work visa, which she acquired a few months later). According to the immigration attorneys, Melania Trump could have been deported from the US if President Trump's policies been in effect back in the 1990s. A pair of immigration lawyers told the Slate website that Ms. Trump put herself into this category when she violated her visa. According to documents obtained Associated Press, Melania Trump (then Knauss) violated the terms of entry, as she was paid for modeling work undertaken in the US while traveling on a visitor (or tourist) visa in 1996. She reportedly earned more than $20,000 in the seven weeks before she actually acquired legal permission to work in the US. Moreover, without disclosing any past imprudence, she went on to apply for a green card in 2001 and became a US citizen in 2006.
